Our own 2017 Audi Q7 tester arrived regarding as loaded with options as any car we now have ever driven. Consider this, base price is $54, 800 but by the time Audi had optioned out this press car, that price experienced risen to an eye watering $85, 425, a few $30K more and enough to buy your kid a brand new Honda Accord. The point here is to display a lot of the impressive tech that Audi offers put into this vehicle and some of it functions very well, and some not so well. More on which later…..
The 2017 Audi Q7 is actually virtually the same height as the old 1, but it looks, lower, wider, and lengthier. This gives the impression of a more truck like appearance, certainly in the photos all of us saw before seeing the car for actual. On initial inspection it is quite handsome. The vehicle rides lower due to Audi relocating the actual engine lower in the chassis, thereby decreasing the Q7’s center of gravity straight down by 2 inches. This makes for outstanding high speed progress in Dynamic mode…..
The important thing to this car’s new livelier performance may be the massive weight loss program Audi put it on. Instead of a beefy chassis for off road (unless you are us most owners would never offroad this particular car), Audi has pulled weight from the Q7’s MLB II body structure, suspension, as well as transmission. Using a mix of high and ultra-high-strength steel and using aluminum on the fenders, cover, doors, and the tailgate, the Q7 person is now 209 pounds lighter…. eat a person heart out Oprah. An additional 221 lbs was shed from the Q7’s suspension, utilizing more aluminum and high-strength steel.
Performance and Handling
The 2017 Q7 features a newer version of Audi’s trusty three. 0-liter supercharged V6. It makes 333 hewlett packard at 5, 500-6, 000 rpm as well as 325 lb-ft @ 2, 900. Mated to a super smooth eight-speed Tiptronic transmitting, which sends power through Audi’s 4 all-wheel drive system to whichever steering wheel needs it. It all works seamlessly.
With the Vbox set up it took a few different roll-outs to get a solid 0-60 time. We attempted traction control off and then on, and also the best we could achieve was 5. 98 secs, slightly slower than Audi’s stated 5. 7 sec, which is unusual because VW Group are typically conservative with overall performance claims. Top speed is limited in the US in order to 130 mph based on tires.
The Q7 comes with either a steel suspension setup or even an air suspension. Our optioned specialist came with air suspension and four-wheel guiding. It works well and you don’t even realize this. At slow speeds, the rear wheels submit the opposite direction of the front wheels to produce a tighter radius and then as you pick up pace they turn in the same direction…….. simple.
The environment suspension is fully adjustable.. including decreasing the car to what we dubbed ‘slammed mode’ to make it easier to load shopping or an arthritis dog into the back. There are several modes including Offroad, where the suspension is at its highest, in order to Comfort, where the suspension is like riding on the pillow…almost. Of course we spent most of our own time in Dynamic, which hunkers the pause down and creates a pretty good impression of the sports sedan.
We kept the guiding in Comfort mode using the individual configurations, as we find it gives the most feedback. Can make the Q7 truly fun to drive, especially for an SUV. It corners pretty toned and the engine has plenty of power to press on to the next bend and beyond. Quick sweepers are favored instead of really restricted turns as the Audi still weighs nearly 5, 000 lb, but give it a tough bend and the Audi remains composed but still surefooted.
As we said earlier the Audi is loaded with driver aides and for probably the most part we turned them off. Street keeping assist pulls the car back into the actual lane if you forget to use the turn indicators, but we find it a bit annoying. The street sign recognition system is a great feature so long as you don’t use it with cruise control. If you undertake the car applies the brakes once this detects a change in the posted speed restrict, which is unnerving the first time. Finally the visitors assist system will accelerate, brake as well as turn with traffic at speeds as high as 37 mph, and it worked pretty well. Maintain your hands on the wheel or it will get quite upset.
We took a vacation out East on the 8 towards Este Centro and then cut North on the outstanding and deserted Imperial Highway S2. Simply past the Border patrol checkpoint the Ca?ón Wash truck trail heads South West and that we stopped to raise the suspension to it is second highest point. The road is tough and washboard like and this continues unless you hit the sandy dry riverbed. Right here the Q7’s traction control kicked within when the car tried to plow straight within the sandy bed, but it coped well. Following a mile the road becomes quite rocky and we stopped and raised the suspension upward another notch to its highest degree. At this level the ride is very smile shakingly jiggly but we needed the actual clearance to pass some larger obstacles. Only one time did we experience some wheel wear a particularly steep bit, after all this is not the Jeep and most owners will never take their own cars offroad. Having said that we made it towards the water tower without incident and the Audi had proven that it stil has some journey in its DNA.
Audi still can make some of the best interiors out there and this one definitely keeps that tradition alive. Our foundation car had the $9, 500 Stature Package and then on top of that a Bang as well as Olufsen 3D sound system with so many speakers We lost count. Add to that the Valcona leather-based seats and suede headliner, making this vehicle ‘all cow, all the time”. Seats tend to be remarkable comfortable and you would have to be the weirdest human shape ever to not find a comfy position. Simply excellent.
Glad to see Audi has added Apple Car Play, making it better to enjoy music while you drive. I used cable connection every time but Bluetooth functions as well. The interior makes it feel like you are piloting an aircraft especially the gear selector as well as mouse wheel. We didn’t try the actual Navigation as we tend to prefer using a smartphone, but I am sure it works pretty much as the normal Audi systems.
A couple of possible annoyances, for those who have bigger families, the rearmost seats really are a bit of a squeeze and normal sized grown ups would have great difficulty getting in and away. Fold them down though and you have a good large cargo area suitable for a Great Dane or some luggage. We had difficulty getting three dogs in the SQ5 but this one is a lot larger. Also if you allow adults totally free range of the HVAC controls in the middle chairs and they leave the fan setting upon high you get an annoying buzz within your ear from the air vents in the W post. I had to scramble into the back to show them down. There’s no way to control all of them from the driver’s seat save for making use of the lock out buttons which stops them from using the controls at all.
